Description
Red Cardinal Watercolor Painting, The Emperor, was my first cardinal painting. The male North American Cardinal is a large, long tailed songbird with a short, very thick bill and prominent crest. These birds are a brilliant red with black mask and throat. Cardinals, in the family Cardinalidae, are passerine birds found in North and South America. They are also known as cardinal-grosbeaks and cardinal-buntings. They are a perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style: a shade of red you cannot take your eyes off. The Cardinal is the official state bird of no fewer than seven eastern states to include Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.
